About Norvin Hein

Norvin Hein (1914-2014) was a scholar of Hinduism and Professor of Comparative Religion at Yale University. He was a pioneer in the study of Hindu devotional traditions, particularly the Vaishnava tradition and the worship of Krishna.

Hein received his Ph.D. from Yale in 1951 with a dissertation on "The Miracle Plays of Mathura," and taught at Yale from 1950 until his retirement in 1983. His scholarship focused on Hindu devotional literature, ritual performance traditions like Ram Lila, and the theological implications of Hindu texts.

This collection includes his published works, manuscripts, research materials, and media related to his extensive fieldwork in India.
